Why PLAB?

A validated instrument that deserves fair international recognition.

PLAB is one of the most scrutinised medical licensing examinations in the world. The evidence base for its predictive validity is public, peer-reviewed, and growing.

Rigorously validated

PLAB is developed by the GMC with input from practising clinicians and psychometricians. Its two parts assess applied knowledge (Part 1) and clinical, communication and professional skills (Part 2 OSCE).

Outcomes track real-world performance

Published research demonstrates that PLAB scores correlate with subsequent postgraduate examination performance and workplace-based assessments in the NHS.

Language-integrated

PLAB is delivered in English and combined with IELTS/OET requirements, providing an integrated assessment of clinical and communication competence.

Continuously updated

The blueprint is reviewed against current UK medical curricula, ensuring content stays aligned with contemporary practice.

Fair and accessible

Testing centres in multiple countries reduce barriers for qualified IMGs and lower the environmental footprint of repeat migration.

Cost-efficient for public systems

Recognising a validated external exam saves regulators the recurring cost of maintaining parallel, near-identical national instruments.

What we are not asking for

Not deregulation. Recognition.

We do not seek to remove language testing, background checks, professional references, or supervised practice. We ask that competent doctors — verified by PLAB and their national qualifications — be spared the burden of repeating equivalent clinical examinations in each jurisdiction. Regulators keep their gatekeeping role; patients get the doctors they need faster.
